Janet Markarian grew up on the North Shore of Long Island. After receiving her MFA in textile design and a Fulbright Hays grant to study weaving in Highland Andes, Janet taught weaving and textile history at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. She also worked with the costume collection at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, later as a textile conservator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and eventually moved to Hong Kong and Mainland China where she designed and manufactured her own line of textiles.
Abigail Collier spent 4 years producing on the overnight shift for the CBS national morning news. She then helped launch digital news outlet The Recount in 2019 to cover U.S. politics. While living at home in Orient during the COVID pandemic, Abigail became interested in her mother Janet’s Orient Linen Co. business and thought it had the potential to grow. For as long as she can remember, the store has always been a part of the family home and life, as well as knitting, weaving and other fiber arts. In July 2022 Abby quit news to run Orient Linen Co. with Janet and their cat Mr. Hughes.
